‘Earth Day Celebration’ Scheduled at Great Bend Zoo on April 23

Businesses and Organizations Encouraged to Join

Three Great Bend businesses that are located on north Main Street are joining efforts to host Great Bend Earth Day Celebration this spring at Great Bend Zoo. The Zoo, Rosewood ECycle, and Great Bend Dairy Queen have scheduled the event to take place April 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’re getting the word out early about this event to encourage other businesses and organizations to celebrate this day with us,” said Great Bend Zoo Curator Ashley Burdick. “The Zoo hosted this event several years ago, and Rosewood ECycle held a similar event last year, so we decided to join forces to bring fun entertainment to the community and to properly commemorate Earth Day.”

Great Bend Earth Day Celebration, which occurs a day after the official 52nd anniversary of Earth Day, is a come-and-go event that is free to the public. Businesses and organizations that want to participate in the celebration can contact Burdick at 620-793-4226, or e-mail her at zoocurator@greatbendks.net. The deadline for booth sign-up is April 1.

Great Bend Earth Day Celebration is geared toward children, but all family members are welcome to participate. Great Bend Dairy Queen will issue a coupon for a free kid’s cone to all youth participants that day. Besides booths and displays planned by Great Bend Zoo and Rosewood ECycle, Burdick said Kansas Wetlands Education Center and the organization, Women For Kansas, have already signed up. She anticipates much more booth participation will occur between now and April, as more businesses and organizations learn about the opportunity.

“I’m confident that businesses and organizations will step up and join in, which will enhance the event experience for children and families,” said Burdick. “We can supply tables for booth set-up, and if there is inclement weather, we can bring the event indoors. I’m excited to hear from those interested in participating in Earth Day Celebration in the coming weeks.”
